The positive effects of hiking on your health

"Hiking is particularly recommended as a health sport, as one can do good for one's health by hiking at any age, in almost any place and without much equipment."
(from press release German Hiking Association July 2003, www.wanderverband.de)

  1. 1. When walking uphill, we not only train our cardiovascular system. Regularly walking uphill lowers cholesterol levels. The harmful cholesterol is broken down and the good HDL cholesterol increases. Walking downhill burns extra sugar in the muscles, which is replaced from the fat cells. We lose fat and gain muscle mass.
  2. 2. High blood sugar levels are lowered - beneficial for preventing adult-onset diabetes.
  3. 3. Hiking strengthens the cardiovascular system; the deep breathing into the lungs improves the blood supply to the body. In addition, cardiovascular diseases are reduced.
  4. 4. The risk of thrombosis is reduced by the improved blood flow.
  5. 5. The brain is also happy! About 1000 litres of blood flow through it to supply it with sugar and oxygen - the blood oxygen content is increased.
  6. 6. Walking helps to get metabolic disorders back under control. All the internal organs are massaged and activated by the movement.
  7. 7. Sweating is nice because harmful substances are released with the sweat and do not have to be detoxified via the liver.
  8. 8. Fatty tissue is replaced by muscle tissue and waste products are broken down and eliminated.
  9. 9. The human psyche stabilises and the immune system is strengthened.
  10. 10. The bone substance regenerates and the joints are protected by muscle strength.
  11. 11. The result is better mobility and coordination.
